Jennifer Garbutt

Solicitor

Jennifer qualified as a Solicitor in September 2000 and, for 14 years, specialised in handling personal injury claims ranging from non-Portal road traffic accident claims, employers and public liability cases, industrial disease claims and medical negligence claims.

Having previous experience in costs from her own case load, Jennifer began to specialise in costs law from 2014.

Jennifer’s previous experience of handling civil cases from cradle to grave means that she is perfectly placed to draft Budgets; understanding fully the complexity of cases and the estimated costs required. She also provides invaluable advice to clients and their Barristers on the parties’ Costs Budgets and the issues that may be raised and is accomplished at Budget negotiations and the preparation of the Precedent R Discussion Report.

Jennifer’s experience and attention to detail is invaluable in the drafting of complex Bills in all aspects of civil litigation including commercial disputes, property disputes and high value banking cases, auditing Budgeted cases and preparing Points of Disputes and Replies to assist maximum recovery of costs.

Jennifer’s advocacy experience also puts her in the ideal position of being able to represent clients at Costs Case Management Conferences dealing with both Directions and Costs Budgets. As at the beginning of 2018, Jennifer has provided advocacy in around 120 Costs Case Management Conferences in numerous County Courts and High Courts around the country. Jennifer’s advocacy experience also extends to Costs Applications dealing with Costs Budgeting issues and final costs issues and to Detailed Assessments.

Outside of work Jennifer enjoys the theatre and going for walks in the Peak District. She meets with family and friends to enjoy a meal out, often replicating her favourite dishes at home.
